■ Description One of the most iconic pieces from the Margiela era at Hermes — the cashmere liner coat from the Autumn/Winter 1998 collection, famously worn on the runway by 1970s supermodel Gunilla Lindblad, where it drew immediate and lasting attention. Martin Margiela served as Hermes' womenswear designer from 1997 to 2003, a period now widely regarded as among the most significant in the house's post-war history. This coat — from the very earliest seasons of that tenure — is today considered one of the most recognizable and sought-after archive pieces of the late 1990s Hermes collection. The design takes its conceptual departure from the inner liner of a military coat, translated here into the language of Hermes luxury: a collarless, closure-free silhouette in an oversized, softly feminine proportion, stripped of all superfluous ornament. Satin piping at the cuffs, front opening, and hem introduces a quiet structural elegance against the matte surface of the cashmere — restrained, precise, and entirely characteristic of Margiela's approach at the house. The fabric is 100% baby cashmere — lightweight yet genuinely warm, with the smooth, almost weightless hand that only the finest cashmere achieves. The interior is lined in silk satin, making the experience of wearing this coat as considered as its appearance. The Margiela era at Hermes was defined by an uncompromising commitment to exceptional materials and minimal beauty. This coat is that philosophy made physical. Size 44 allows for unisex wear.
This is the same design as one that sold on Yahoo Auctions in May for ¥508,000 (see image 9) — that piece was in camel wool, while this one is in baby cashmere.
