■ Description Since their debut at Martin Margiela's first-ever runway show in Spring/Summer 1989, the Tabi boot has remained the single most important signature object of the Maison. This listing offers the rare Artisanal Line silver-painted version.
The Birth of the Tabi The tabi takes its name from the traditional Japanese split-toe sock, dating back at least to the fifteenth century. Drawing on this design, Margiela introduced his signature shoe at his very first runway show in 1988 — instructing models to dip their white boots in red paint, leaving footprints across the white canvas-lined runway. It was a legendary debut: equal parts fashion show and performance art.
The Philosophy of the Painted Tabi Throughout his twenty years at the helm of the Maison, Margiela returned to the Tabi boot motif every season in a different form. For Fall/Winter 199192, he established the practice of applying paint directly to garments and Tabi boots — a gesture interpreted as simultaneously modern and postmodern. In embracing imperfection and the passage of time, the paint becomes a living surface: as it chips and peels, each boot acquires its own distinct character and tells its own story — a physical embodiment of the transient nature of art and fashion.
This particular example features silver paint applied by hand to the leather surface of an existing Tabi boot. The contrast and texture created by silver paint over black leather is unlike any other version of the style, and as with all painted Artisanal pieces, the precise distribution and layering of paint is unique to this pair alone — a true one-of-a-kind object.
The Tabi boot is held in the permanent collection of MoMA and is widely recognized as one of the most significant shoe designs in fashion history. The Artisanal silver-painted version from the 1990s appears only rarely on the secondary market, and commands a level of collector reverence reserved for only the most exceptional archive pieces.
